Etymology[edit]
From Middle Chinese 般若波羅蜜 (MC paen nyaeX pa la mjit), itself being Kumārajīva's transliteration of Sanskrit प्रज्ञापारमिता (prajñāpāramitā); equivalent to 般若 (hannya, “wisdom”) + 波羅蜜 (haramitsu, “completeness, perfection”).
Compare 般若波羅蜜多 (hannya haramitta), Xuanzang's later transliteration of the same Buddhist term.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
般若波羅蜜 • (hannya haramitsu)
- (Buddhism) prajnaparamita (perfection of wisdom, one of the six or ten transcendental virtues in Mahayana Buddhism)
