Etymology 1

[edit]
    Kanji in this term
    苹 果
    ひょう
    Hyōgai
    か
    Grade: 4
    kan'yōon on'yomi

Ultimately from Middle Chinese 蘋果 (MC bjin kwaX).

The date of first attestation is currently not clear. However, the Japanese reading uses the kan'yōon of hyō for the 苹 kanji, which only appears in the simplified Chinese spelling 苹果 (píngguǒ), suggesting that this must be a relatively recent orthographic borrowing from Chinese, applying the regular Japanese on'yomi to the spelling. If this term had entered Japanese before the Chinese simplification reforms, the expected reading would be binka or binga, based on the regular on'yomi of bin for the 蘋 kanji.

Usage of this reading might be restricted to commerce.[1]

Ultimately from Middle Chinese 蘋果 (MC bjin kwaX).

The date of first attestation is currently not clear. However, the Japanese reading uses the kan'on of hei for the 苹 kanji, which only appears in the simplified Chinese spelling 苹果 (píngguǒ), suggesting that this must be a relatively recent orthographic borrowing from Chinese, applying the regular Japanese on'yomi to the spelling. If this term had entered Japanese before the Chinese simplification reforms, the expected reading would be binka or binga, based on the regular on'yomi of bin for the 蘋 kanji.
