Etymology[edit]

Compound of (ao, blue) +‎ (sora, sky). The sora reading for changes to zora as an instance of rendaku (連濁). The reading was aosora until roughly the mid-Meiji Period. The shift to rendaku pronunciation has been relatively recent.
