Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀁𑀥𑀇 (saṃdhaï), 𑀲𑀁𑀥𑁂𑀇 (saṃdhei), from Sanskrit संदधाति (saṃdadhāti, places on, combines), from दधाति (dadhāti, puts), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *dádʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dádʰaHti, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰédʰeh₁ti (to be putting). The simplification of *sā̃dh- to sān- is probably from a merging with Prakrit *𑀲𑀁𑀡𑁂𑀤𑀺 (*saṃṇedi), from Sanskrit संनयति (saṃnayati, unites, merges, mixes) (whence Pali sanneti (mixes, kneads)).
