1. dare, risk, brave, defy

   雨(あめ)の中(なか)、傘(かさ)もささずに冒(おか)して外出(がいしゅつ)した。

   Ame no naka, kasa mo sasazu ni okashite gaishutsu shita.

   He braved the rain without his umbrella.

   常識(じょうしき)を冒(おか)す

   jōshiki o okasu

2. (for an ailment to) afflict

   あの薬品(やくひん)は肺(はい)を冒(おか)すことがある。

   Ano yakuhin wa hai o okasu koto ga aru.

   That chemical can irritate the lungs.

3. profane (something sacred)

   彼(かれ)らは神聖(しんせい)な儀式(ぎしき)を冒(おか)す言動(げんどう)を取(と)った。

   Karera wa shinsei na gishiki o okasu gendō o totta.

   Their words and deeds profaned the sacred rite.
