From Proto-Tai *kepᴰ (“to pick”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩮᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ເກັບ (kep), Lü ᦵᦂᧇ (k̇eb), Tai Dam ꪹꪀꪸꪚ, Shan ၵဵပ်း (káep), Ahom 𑜀𑜢𑜆𑜫 (kip). Compare Khmer កើប (kaəp, “to gather up”).
