From Byzantine Greek ἐβγαίνω (ebgaínō), with metathesis from Ancient Greek ἐκβαίνω (ekbaínō, go out) (perfect ἐκβέβηκα (ekbébēka)), from ἐκ- (ek-, out) + βαίνω (baínō, to go).
