Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *wai. Compare Latin vae, Lithuanian vaĩ, vái, Russian увы́ ‎(uvý, alas), Middle Irish fáe, Welsh gwae ‎(woe), Avestan [script needed] ‎(vayōi, āvōya), Sanskrit उवे ‎(uvé), Persian وای ‎(vây).
