Etymology[edit]

Via German Low German from Middle Low German drōne (alongside more common drāne), from Old Saxon drāna. The Low German form replaced the older Middle High German tren(e), from Old High German treno. The word was originally masculine but became feminine in early modern German, probably by influence of Biene (bee). The fact that drones were males was generally unknown. The aircraft sense is borrowed from cognate English drone.
