Etymology[edit]
From Middle Low German, from underlying an/up den hôen ôver (“on the high shore/bank”). Note that the area of central Hannover now called Am Hohen Ufer was banked up later and is not the at the origin of the city's name; it may rather have been called thus after the latter.
