Borrowed from Latin (nomen) patronymicum, from Ancient Greek πατρονυμικόν (patronumikón, patronym), from πατρωνυμικός (patrōnumikós, patronymic), from πατήρ (patḗr, father) + ὄνυμα (ónuma) (Doric form of ὄνομα (ónoma, name)) + -ικός (-ikós).
