Borrowed from English Russia, from Medieval Latin Russi (Russians). Ultimately from Byzantine Greek Ῥωσία (Rhōsía) (whence also Russian Росси́я (Rossíja, Russia)) from an earlier (10th century) ethnonym Ῥῶς (Rhôs) (Arabic رُوس (rūs), Old East Slavic Русь (Rusĭ, Rus)).
