From Persian صفوی (Safavi) +‎ -id, from Arabic صَفَوِيّ (Ṣafawiyy), from صَفِيّ (Ṣafiyy, Safi-ad-Din Ardabili) + ـَوـ (-aw-, interfix) + ـِيّ (-iyy, -i, -y, suffix forming adjectives and relational nouns).
