[edit]From Middle High German schīze, from Proto-Germanic *skītaz, *skitiz, from Proto-Indo-European *skeyd- (“to part”).
Germanic cognates include English shit, Low German Schiet, Dutch schijt, West Frisian skyt, Swedish skit. Standard High German terms derived from Low German are Schiet and Schitte.

[edit]While a direct cognate with shit in English, Scheiße can be used as a catch-all term for all forms of vulgarity and swear words in German.
Though not appropriate in formal language, Scheiße and related terms are not as taboo as other vulgar words, such as Fotze and those related to ficken.
