Sense 6, Alternative form of pastel, no corresponding link there. DonnanZ (talk) 17:46, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Webster's New World College Dictionary lists two senses: "pastel for crayons” and "a crayon of pastel”. I guess the first refers to the material. I don’t think I saw this sense before, but here is one use. The Oxford Guide to Effective Writing and Speaking lists the pair pastel/pastille under the heading “Words sometimes confused”. The word pastil is a dated form of both.  --Lambiam 18:07, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
pastille”, in The Century Dictionary [], New York, N.Y.: The Century Co., 1911, →OCLC. refers to pastil”, in The Century Dictionary [], New York, N.Y.: The Century Co., 1911, →OCLC. which has as one definition "In art: A thin round cake of water-color, of French origin, in consistency between the old hard cake and the tube-color." Whether the French origin is of the word or the cake is not obvious to me. In any event, I don't think every sense of pastel is a sense of pastille. DCDuring (talk) 21:06, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
cited, but I agree that the definition should be improved, rather than calling it an alt form Kiwima (talk) 00:17, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the quotations, the ones over 100 years old are treating pastille as pastel; the 2003 quote refers to "small pastilles of dry pigment", a standard use of pastille. I assume that "alternative form of pastel" is now well and truly obsolete (now labelled as such). DonnanZ (talk) 08:14, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I seem to remember trays of watercolour paints for children, where each colour was like a small cake set into the tray, which would rub off onto a small brush which had been dipped in water. Would that be a pastille? DonnanZ (talk) 11:12, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Kiwi"lightning"ma cited it before I even read the request, but: why should there be a corresponding link there? If X is an alt form of Y then Y shouldn't say "alt form of X" also or else we are creating a circular loop. (Of course you can always use the alt-forms header.) There probably shouldn't be a corresponding link from pastel if this sense is obsolete, it was merely an observation I made in the beginning. DonnanZ (talk) 11:29, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
