I'm an etymologist who's currently on the work of creating Japanese (not on'yomi, as many are derived from Middle Chinese) etymologies; focusing here on the ones from Proto-Japonic! I am also trying to revive the Proto-Japonic information that will be available. Soon I may create a complete list of Proto-Japonic words (if I can).

Miscellaneous[edit]

Pre-Proto-Japonic Reconstructions[edit]

Possibly roots belong to Pre-Proto-Japonic, an earlier stage of Proto-Japonic, or at least reconstructed roots that are now extinct.

*puk-[edit]

I suggest this reconstruction of Pre-Proto-Japonic root *puk- to support the following words:

  • 膨る (pukur-, Old Japanese pronunciation):
  • 吹く (fuku, to blow)
  • (fukuro, bag)

*pVt-[edit]

  • *pitə (one)
  • *patu (first)
  • *pa (edge, via deletion of the -t element) (< *pat)
