A couple of things

It appears that you have burst on the Wiktionary scene with quite a bit of gusto. However, you may have noticed that some of your creations have been deleted or redirected. You may want to spend a bit of time editing here and get a feel for our policies and practices before digging into maintenance templates and the like. For example, your creation of WP:HD suffers from a number of problems, which is why it is now a redirect. To begin with, it uses the wrong prefix (WP), when Wiktionary shortcuts start with WT. Secondly, we already have a desk for questions at Wiktionary:Information desk, which is where WP:HD currently redirects to. Also, Template:help me has been deleted, as Wiktionary is still small enough that there is little need for such templates and categories. Admins can watch enough of what's going on to simply spot users who need assistance. Finally, User:Iamthe7DeadlySins/Adoption Page might be a bit presumptuous, as you are still a new user yourself and probably not yet qualified to adopt another user. I advise taking some time to read through some of the links given atop your talk page and get to know us a bit better. Black background = hard to read

For your signature, black is fine, but your user page and, especially, your talk page are very hard to read for humans. White may be boring, but it's common because it is very legible, making for maximum contrast with the range of possible font colors. Black fonts have the advantage of maximum contrast as well. Don't give up.

I had to learn the hard way, too, that Wiktionary is very, very different from Wikipedia. But don't worry- you'll adjust. I personally think that the main reason the atmosphere here is rather tense is because there's so much to do- we're trying to catalouge every word in every language, that's not easy. On Wikipedia there are thousands upon thousands of users present at one time- here, it's rare for over twenty users to be active at once. Discussion tabs exist for words but they are rarely ever used- the four discussion rooms (WT:ID, WT:TR, WT:BP, and WT:GP) pretty much cover everything. So just try to calm down a bit and enjoy the words- that's what we're all about. Teh Rote 17:19, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Projects

While I know you're not going to like hearing this, you need to nonetheless. We generally discourage new users from participating in recent changes patrolling and template creation (in fact, I can think of users who have been blocked for doing those things without really knowing what they were doing). Take some time and work some entries before you get involved in those. As for projects, we have a number of them. Wiktionary:Categorizing is a huge project and is always in need of help. Also, we have a bot which does some amazing formatting for us, User:AutoFormat. Some things it doesn't do it tags for humans to take care of, with an example being Category:Entries with transitive verb header. Also, Requests for verification is always backlogged. If you care to search for examples of use for words that is always appreciated effort. If you know another language other than English, I'm sure I could connect you with people working on that language, and they would know what needs work. There are many other things which need help, so if none of those appeal to you, just give me a buzz and I'm sure I could rattle off a new list. -Atelaes λάλει ἐμοί 17:34, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

I believe that line is actually concerning the Global Account status (the line immediately below edits), and simply means that your global account is set up and working properly. Although, admittedly, I'm not much of a techie, so I could be wrong. -Atelaes λάλει ἐμοί 18:34, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

adjectival noun

Images

In response to your query on EP's page, we have decided to not have any images on Wiktionary, but rather to only use images from Wiksource. I have no idea what their policies are on uploading there, but I have to imagine you don't have to be an admin. I dont have to be an admin, but im going for it. Another 900 edits will make me eligable. Shouldnt take too long, i got 100 edits in about less than 2 days, so. But yeah, i cant wait until i become an admin. You should nominate me when i have at least 1000 edits.

Bear in mind that 1000 edits does not automatically grant you an admin nod. You'll only get that if people see that you have a solid understanding of our policies, and you've made a lot of solid mainspace contributions. I think that when I got nominated my edit count was closer to 5000 and I had totally revamped the Ancient Greek language section. Administrator standards

Take a look at some of the other administrators:

• User:Panda10 has only been here six months, but has added thousands upon thousands of entries in Hungarian.
• User:Nadando has made some mistakes, but he has always learned from them and has consistantly been improving.
• User:Krun hasn't been here long, but knows bits of over 6 languages.
• And so on. The administrators have been very diverse, and to create stone standards wouldn't be fair. There aren't many required standards, but for you, I'd recommend adding entries (after reading over WT:ELE and getting a good understanding of policy) and reverting vandalism. Get lots of experience, but don't have your heart set on it- just enjoy the ride. Teh Rote 01:04, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

I think you are a really motivated character and, when the time is right, you would make an excellent admin. However, for now it's best that you just read over the policies, add a bunch of entries, get familiar with everything, participate in some discussion, and just enjoy yourself here. In approving new admins, we've mostly considered the question "Do we trust the candidate to do a good job creating and editing content?" People who frequently have to be reminded of policy, or who do not know format standards are not likely to be approved. Number of edits is not usually considered, although a demonstration of experience with community policies and standards, as well as collegial interaction in the discussion fora are often factors. --EncycloPetey 01:28, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Please do not add words generated using translation software. First, such software is notoriously unrelaible, and second it is copyright infrigement to take someone else's data and publish it in a new location. This same problem exists when using printed dictionaries. We therefore generally ask contributors to only add words for languages with which they themselves are familiar or can find a published source no longer under copyright. --EncycloPetey 01:34, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

I speak French. I know what most French words mean, thats why ive been adding French to the wiktionary. But i put that it was from Microsoft because what am i supposed to say? Just trust me? Well, i guess i can now that i think about it, but i didnt think of that before. Yep, see this page for exact specifications on just how many languages i know. Chow.

But according to my French dictionary, the word is spelled école, not ecole. That's what everyone else is saying as well in the discussion. Also, the link you provided to demonstrate the languages you know is a red link, pointing nowhere. Porquoy? was also wrong and has been deleted. First, it should not be capitalized. Second, it should not contain punctuation. Third (and most importantly), it was misspelled. It should have been pourquoi, which we already have. Please, if you don't actually know the language, do not enter terms from it. You are creating a lot of cleanup work for others. There are several ways to add diacritics to your edits. If you are editing a page, you can use the EditTools, which should appear below your edit window. If you are trying to create a new page, then you can add the word to your sandbox with a link (using the EditTools), then follow the link you created from the sandbox page. Your computer may also allow you to use or even create shortcuts that will let you type these characters directly into a search or URL window displayed in your browser, but that varies from OS to OS. --EncycloPetey 02:02, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Desire for adminship.

To be honest, I find somewhat off-putting your blatant desire to become an administrator. You haven't been here long enough to have a real stake in the project, and it's not like you have to be an admin to really help out. There are some things that only admins can do, but mostly they're boring and annoying things that no one in their right mind would be excited to do. Block warning

Hi, While you are clearly acting in good faith, you're really beginning to annoy me. Slow down and do things properly. It's not that hard. if you need guidelines we have 800,000 pages for you to copy the layout off, and the rules are layed down in WT:ELE (read it. NOW). Do not create "usage notes" or "references" sections unless there is relevant information to put in there. Always use one of the Inflection templates after the === Noun === heading (which always only has ONE part of speech). If you can't get these basic things right then it becomes easier for me to just block you from editing temporarily to give me time to clean up the mess. Conrad.Irwin 22:24, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Could you do me a big favour and FIX the following entries yourself. Copying the format at rues, note the lang= parameter on the {{plural of}} template that you'll have to fix for each language. Ok. Thanks for trying. FYI every language has a code. If you don't know what it is then look up the language name on Wiktionary or Wikipedia and it will tell you. An inflection line (see WT:ELE) is the line below the level three header (that's the one that is === Noun === on plurals). It should contain at least the entries title. For most words there is a template that will do this and other fancy stuff too. {{infl}} {{en-noun}} and {{en-verb}} being the most common, however for plurals you can just use '''page title goes here'''. Please stop offering to create userpages for people, it is a waste of Wiktionary's server resources and achieves nothing expect self-perpetuating competition (yes I know Wikipedia loves them, Wiktionary doesn't). Awards

Wiktionary does not have any awards system. Our population of regular editors is so small, we really have no need for them. I have seen two abortive attempts made to institute personal awards in my time here, but neither proposal received much support. --EncycloPetey 20:18, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Forteign language edits

You have babel boxes for English and French. They should be the ONLY languages that you edit in. For example, if you do not know Dutch, you cannot be sure that the plural given is correct. SemperBlotto 22:10, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Bots

You are not going to be able to write a bot in English, you have to use a Programming language. I would recommend Python as this will allow you to use the Pywikipediabot for the complicated stuff. Programming is fun, but you need more than just CSS and HTML, as they are only for webpages, (though there are tools that use Javascript to help patrol).

If you just want to do recent changes patrol, then join irc://irc.freenode.net#cvn-wt-en (see WT:IRC for more info, Chatzilla is a popular IRC client if you haven't got one already) which gives a list of edits as they happen (WARNING: You'll find me there too ;). Bots run on your local computer and connect to the wiki over the network as though they were human editors. They don't run on the wiki, though some bot owners publish the source code of the bot on the wiki so that other people can see it. If you want more information, download Pywikipediabot and play with it.An example of a (very advanced) bot is User:AutoFormat, and you can see its code from the link at the top of its userpage. Sorry, I can't teach you this over wiki. First get python working, see http://python.org then get pywikipediabot working. Greetings. I'm interested in where you found this word, and this "etymology": Gods + peace Originated in Finland. It's not a real word, and definitely not of Finnish origin. It is absolutely necessary that when you create new entries you use some references (there's plenty of English dictionaries available), and that you add references in non-obvious cases. Since it is obvious that this is not a valid word, I'll propose its deletion. --Jyril 06:58, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Further information

This is partly a response to your emails. I blocked you partly because of the bot issue, and partly because despite the #Block warning I gave you above, you have only ever made 3 edits in the dictionary that have not had someone clean up after you. See your contributions. I (and others) have spent the last few days trying to teach you how to do things, yet you seem to ignore almost everything we say unless we repeat ourselves endlessly. I hope you will use this day's break to read the layout policy (as requested half a dozen times above). Bot approval is only generally given to editors who can be trusted to work sensibly with the community, at the moment you do not fufil this criteria and I can almost guarantee that your bot request will be denied. I hope you come back tomorrow, but I hope that you will come back calmer and more sensible. Editing quickly is not a good thing (though I'm guilty of it too), edits should be well thought out and checked through carefully (using "Show preview" if necessary) before saving them. Your honeymoon period is ovcer, and I suspect that unless you make a quite considerable effort to improve your editting you will be blocked again. Wikiing is not that hard, but it is not easy; you will find it much more satisfying if you can do it well.

Your bot... You say you want a bot that will tell you of edits that happen so that you can patrol them. A far easier way for you to do this is already provided at irc://irc.freenode.net#cvn-wt-en by the counter-vandalism team. (If you can't install software, you can get onto IRC using http://mibbit.com) I suggest that before you run a bot to do these things, you do it by hand for a bit first. That way you will get a feel for where improvements can be made which will help you write a better bot, it will also give you a chance to learn how to spot vandals more easily, and the best way to fix problematic edits.
