Etymology
[edit]Likely borrowed from French alligator, from English alligator, which in turn came from Spanish el lagarto (“the lizard”).[1] The shift to penultimate stress is likely borrowed from the English pronunciation of the term, which displaced the original pronunciation of aligator.[2]
Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /aliˈɡatoɾ/ [a.liˈɣ̞a.t̪oɾ]
Audio (Venezuela): (file) - Rhymes: -atoɾ
- Syllabification: a‧li‧gá‧tor

Usage notes
[edit]Although the term is standard, the Royal Spanish Academy recommends the use of caimán instead, due to its longer and more widespread usage in Spanish.[2]
