Etymology[edit]

Via other European languages, ultimately a borrowing from Latin apostrophus, itself a borrowing from Ancient Greek ἀπόστροφος (apóstrophos, accent of elision), a nominal use of an adjective derived from the verb ἀποστρέφω (apostréphō, I turn away).
