Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Latin apostrophus, itself a borrowing from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek ἀπόστροφος (apóstrophos, accent of elision), a nominal use of an adjective derived from the verb ἀποστρέφω (apostréphō, I turn away).
