Low German

Etymology

From earlier barsten, from Middle Low German bersten, from Old Saxon brestan, from Proto-Germanic *brestaną, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰres- (to burst, break, crack, split, separate). Compare Dutch barsten, German barsten, English burst, Swedish brista. The development of basten from barsten closely mirrors the development of the English verb bust from the equivalent English cognate, burst.
