Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German betūren, a prefigation of tūren ‎(to consider grave). Equivalent to modern be- +‎ dauern (etymology 2), the simplex of which is now archaic. Pertaining to teuer ‎(dear, expensive). The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German dūren).
