From Middle High German dūren, borrowed from Middle Low German dūren, itself from Latin dūrō. Compare Dutch duren, English dure.

  1. (transitive) to last, to continue, to persist (for a period of time)
    Der Film dauert zwei Stunden.
    The movie lasts two hours.
  2. (intransitive) to last, to be permanent
    Unsere Liebe wird dauern.
    Our love will last.
  3. (impersonal, with bis) to take time, to take a while (for, until)
    Es dauert, bis die Medizin wirkt.
    It takes time for the medicine to work.
