Etymology[edit]

Alongside older betrapen, from Middle Dutch betrapen (to catch). Equivalent to be- +‎ trappen, with trappen in the now-obsolete sense "catch, trap". The reason for the single consonant and long vowel in Middle Dutch is unclear.
