Usage notes[edit]
Since this term happens to end in -i, its derivation with the adjective-forming suffix -i is not used (as opposed to nő (“woman”) → női). Instead, compounds are formed with it, so their spelling will be consistently different (although it is not always followed in daily practice): férficipő – női cipő (“women’s shoes”), férfifodrász – női fodrász (“women’s hairdresser”), férfinév – női név (“women’s name”), férfivécé – női vécé (“women’s toilet”).
In these cases, men are referred to as the target group (“intended for men”) or as part of other semantic relations (belonging to them, consisting of them, used by them, practiced by them, made by them etc.). On the other hand, férfi is still written separately from the following word if it merely signifies the gender of an individual (férfi dolgozó, eladó, hallgató, alkalmazott, szereplő etc.).
