From Old High German fimf, from Proto-Germanic *fimf, from *pémpe, variant of Proto-Indo-European *pénkʷe. Formal cognates include Dutch vijf, English five, Yiddish פֿינף (finf), Gothic 𐍆𐌹𐌼𐍆 (fimf) and Faroese fimm.
