Etymology

From Middle High German *horten, horden, from Old High German *hortōn, from Proto-West Germanic *hoʀdōn (to hoard), equivalent to Hort (shelter, refuge, haven) +‎ -en. Cognate with Old English hordian (whence English hoard).
