From Middle Dutch cauwe, from Old Dutch *kāwa, from Proto-Germanic *kahwō (compare West Frisian ka), from Proto-Indo-European *geh₁(i)- (sing) (compare Lithuanian giedóti, Tocharian A kāk (he calls upon), Sanskrit गायति (gāyati)).
