Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 老爺, composed of (old) and (grandfather), from Chinese 老爺老爷, eggcorn of lão da, due to confusion between Chinese (, Sino-Vietnamese da), Sino-Vietnamese -gia (family; -ist) and native Vietnamese da (skin). Not to be confused with Chinese 老家 (lão gia). See also Gia Tô.
