Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 老爺, composed of 老 (“old”) and 爺 (“grandfather”), from Chinese 老爺／老爷, eggcorn of lão da, due to confusion between Chinese 爺／爷 (yé, Sino-Vietnamese da), Sino-Vietnamese -gia (“family; -ist”) and native Vietnamese da (“skin”). Not to be confused with Chinese 老家 (lão gia). See also Gia Tô.
