From Middle Dutch luusteren, lūsteren, from Old Dutch *lūstren, from Proto-Germanic *hlūstrijaną, frequentative of *hlūstaną, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlew- (to hear). Cognate with German Low German lüstern (to listen), German hlūstrēn (whence obsolete or dialectal German laustern, Luxembourgish lauschteren).
