Latvian

Etymology

From the same stem as melns (q.v.): (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Baltic *mel-n, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *mel- (dark, red color; dirty). Interestingly, the same stem gave rise to blue- and black-color terms in Baltic languages. Cognates include (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lithuanian dialectal mė́las (blue), Sudovian mełno (black).[1]
