Etymology

After Genesis 31, 35 (different expressions are used in the Hebrew text and Bible translations for Genesis 18, 11, contrast the quotations from the NBG 51 below), from Latin iuxta consuetudinem feminarum (nunc) accidit mihi (“(now) it befalls me according to the manner of women”) (Vulgate) or Ancient Greek τὰ κατ᾿ ἐθισμὸν τῶν γυναικῶν μοι ἐστίν (tà kat᾿ ethismòn tôn gunaikôn moi estín) (Septuagint), ultimately from Biblical Hebrew דֶרֶךְ נָשִׁים לִי (“the way of women (is) to me”). The phrasing is relatively close to the text in the Deux-Aesbijbel: het gaet my na der vrouwen wijse. The Statenvertaling has ['t gaet] my nae der wijven wijse, the Liesveltbijbel has mi is nv geschiet na die ghewoonte vanden vrouwen. Literally, “to go in the manner of the women”.
