Etymology 1

From Northern Middle Vietnamese mlài, ultimately from Sanskrit मल्लि (malli, jasmine), perhaps through Chinese 茉莉 (mạt lị, jasmine). The reduction of the first syllable can also be seen in Khmer ម្លិះ (mlih, jasmine).
