Etymology[edit]

From Middle Dutch entfarmen, ontfarmen, from Old Dutch *intfarmon, with two prefixes ont- and af attached to Proto-West Germanic *armēn, from Proto-Germanic *armāną (to pity). The word erbarmen derives from the same source, via Old High German and with a different prefix. Related to arm (poor).
