[edit]From Middle Dutch ontginnen, derived with prefix ont- from Proto-Germanic *ginnaną, which is not attested in unprefixed form in any Germanic language (compare beginnen and Old Dutch aginnan). Cognate to Old English onginnan and Old Saxon andginnan.
