[edit]Affixed per- + gawai (“work”), from Malay pegawai. Replaced Dutch ambtenaar (“civil servant”) by Komisi Bahasa Indonesia as published on Kanpō/Berita Pemerintah No.38 Year III Month 3 (2604) in 1944.
