From Middle High German rīmen (to compose, put into verse, rhyme), from Old High German rīman (to count, enumerate), from Proto-Germanic *rīmaną (to count), from Proto-Indo-European *rēy- (to add, fit, count). Cognate with Middle Low German rîmen (to appraise, show honour, put into verse, rhyme).
