Usage notes

[edit]

In informal speech, the pronoun en in this phrasal verb often appears in front of the past participle in perfect tenses, instead of its expected position before the auxiliary. Thus,"Je m'en suis allé" (standard) may become "Je me suis en allé" (colloquial).

This usage is likely influenced by semantically related verbs with en- as a prefix, such as s'enfuir or s'envoler.

Conjugation

[edit]

The verb aller has a unique and highly irregular conjugation, based on the suppletive stems all-, ir- and va-.
