German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]17th century, borrowed from Yiddish סחרן (sakhern, “to do business”), derived from Hebrew סחר (sáḥar, “trade”). The form was influenced by now obsolete schachen (“to plunder”, with long [aː]), itself from Proto-West Germanic *skāk (“robbery”). The synonymous Yiddish שאַכערן (shakhern) may be a reborrowing.
