From Proto-Finnic *toodak, from Proto-Uralic *toxi- (compare Northern Sami duohkat, Erzya туемс (tujems), Hungarian tojik). Maybe originally a borrowing from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃- (to give) whence also Latin dare, donum, Russian дать (dat'), Czech dát.
