German

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German verwarn. Equivalent to ver- +‎ wahren.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [fɛɐ̯ˈvaːʁən]
  • Hyphenation: ver‧wah‧ren
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

verwahren (weak, third-person singular present verwahrt, past tense verwahrte, past participle verwahrt, auxiliary haben)

  1. (transitive) to keep safe, to store
  2. (reflexive) to protest, repudiate, object, reject (e.g., a statement, accusations, etc.) [with gegen (+ accusative) ‘something’]

Usage notes

[edit]

Due to the semantic and phonetic similarity, verwahren in the sense of "to protest, repudiate" is frequently confused with the verb verwehren (to refuse, deny, forbid), e.g. Ich *verwehre mich gegen diese Anschuldigungen. instead of Ich verwahre mich gegen diese Anschuldigungen. ("I object against these accusations.")
