From Old Galician and Old Portuguese julgar, from Old Leonese julgar; the patrimonial Galician-Portuguese form juygar is attested, for example, in the 13th century Cantigas de Santa Maria; from Latin iūdicāre, present active infinitive of iūdicō (pass judgement). Compare Portuguese julgar, Asturian xulgar, Spanish juzgar.
