Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Formation comparable to κειρία (keiría, band, tapeworm). According to Beekes, probably from Proto-Indo-European *ten- (stretch), the same root of τείνω (teínō, to stretch), even though the details are rather unclear. The missing link may be a noun like *ταῖνα (*taîna) or *ταινά (*tainá).
