    Inherited from Apabhramsa जलइ (jalaï), from Prakrit 𑀚𑀮𑀇 (jalaï), from Sanskrit ज्वलति (jvalati), from ज्वल् (jval), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵwelH-.

    First attested in c. 1649[1] as Middle Hindi جلنا (jlna /⁠jalnā⁠/).
