Borrowed from Swedish öre, from Latin aureus (a Roman coin; golden). Doublet of aureus, eyrir, øre, and oyra.

From Old Norse eyrir, from Proto-Germanic *aurijaz. Probably from Latin aureus (gold coin). First attested in the 9th to 10th century.[1]
