From Proto-Hellenic *génos, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁os (race). Cognates include Latin gens, Latin genus, Sanskrit जनस् (jánas), Old Armenian ծին (cin) and English kin. Also see γίγνομαι (gígnomai, I am born).
