From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéd-. Cognates include Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬜𐬀𐬲 (zaδah, anus), Sanskrit हद् (had), हदति (hadati, to evacuate, discharge excrement), Old Armenian ձետ (jet, tail, penis), Albanian dhjes (to shit), Kurdish.
