From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéd-. Cognates include Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬜𐬀𐬲 ‎(zaδah, anus), Sanskrit हद् ‎(had), हदति ‎(hadati, to evacuate, discharge excrement), Old Armenian ձետ ‎(jet, tail, penis), Albanian dhjes ‎(to shit) and Kurdish زوتك ‎(zutik, anus).
