Inherited from Old East Slavic вѣньць (věnĭcĭ), from Proto-Slavic *vĕnьcь, from *vĕnъ (wreath) + *-ьcь, details of further origin unclear (possibly from Proto-Indo-European *woh₁y-nos or derived later) but ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (to twist, wind, weave).

Cognate to вен (ven), венок (venok), ве́ник (vénik), вейка (vejka), вить (vitʹ).
