From Old East Slavic гонъ (gonŭ), from Proto-Slavic *gonъ, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰónos (compare Ancient Greek φόνος (phónos, murder)), o-grade of Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰen- (whence Proto-Slavic *gъnàti, 1sg. *ženǫ, whence Russian гнать (gnatʹ)).
